"My heart goes out to anyone who is the victim of domestic violence and I am encouraged that the city will begin to focus additional resources on this tragic issue.  I was relieved to hear Sojourner Center Executive Director Connie Phillips assure the members of the subcommittee that there was not an emergency at the shelter and that there would be no closing of beds through June 30, 2013.  We also were told no additional beds would be added as a result of emergency funding.  This allows time to take a more comprehensive approach to the needs of those serving victims of domestic violence in our community.

I am disappointed the committee did not support my motion to expand the dollar amount from $100,000 to $250,000 and make it a fair and equitable process for all the domestic violence shelters turning away victims daily. However, I look forward to supporting a comprehensive and expanded proposal to address the growing needs in our community to support the victims of domestic violence."
