The city of Phoenix today launched a new mapping application that provides a single point of access to information for which residents most often contact the city.
The Information by Mapped Address in Phoenix (IMAP) interactive web mapping application, accessible at phoenix.gov/imap, allows residents to search for city services, City Council districts and even schools and hospitals nearest their location by simply typing in an address.
“IMAP is just one of many initiatives from my office designed to enhance phoenix.gov to make necessary information for the public easily accessible,” said Mayor Greg Stanton.
The ITS Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Services team created IMAP for the Mayor’s Office by using GIS technology to display city-owned and non-city owned authoritative source spatial/data maintained in the GIS. This approach of using authoritative data helps ensure residents receive more accurate information than is provided by commercial maps and enables an efficient use of city resources by leveraging existing city-owned technology and data to provide a new online customer resource.
"This is the best example using advanced technology to become more efficient and better serve residents because it utilizes resources we already have, at no additional cost to taxpayers," said Vice Mayor Bill Gates, chairman of the City Council Finance, Efficiency, Innovation and Sustainability Subcommittee. "Technology is key to protecting taxpayers and reaching our goal of $100 million in efficiency savings by 2015."
Providing more interactive maps on phoenix.gov is one of many enhancements the city will be making to its website in the coming months. The ITS GIS Services team also has created custom maps for other city departments, such as the “Find My Council District” map for the City Clerk Department, and the “Find a Dog Park” map for the Parks and Recreation Department.
