Accredidation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

Public Safety Manager Jack Harris announced today that from August 17 through August 21, 2008, a team of assessors from the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA) will be in Phoenix to examine all aspects of the Phoenix Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services.  The Phoenix Police Department was first accredited in November 1986, and was reaccredited in 1991, 1996, 1999, 2002, and 2005.  This will be the department’s sixth reaccreditation.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments to the assessors at a public information session on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.  This session will take place at the City Council Chambers at 200 West Jefferson Street.

Individuals who are unable to attend the public session are encouraged to contact the CALEA assessors by telephone on Monday, August 18, 2008, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at (602) 495-5186, or in writing to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.  (CALEA), 10302 Eaton Place, Ste. 100, Fairfax, Virginia 22030-2215.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards.  A copy of the standards is available for review at the Planning and Research Bureau on the third floor of the Police Headquarters Building located at 620 West Washington Street.  The agency accreditation manager is Commander Glen Gardner of the Planning and Research Bureau; he may be contacted at (602) 262-6543.

The on-site assessment will be led by Superintendent Susan Maycock of the Peel Ontario Police Department and she will be joined by a team of two law enforcement professionals.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit police facilities, and other locations where compliance can be observed.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.

For more information regarding the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc, please write the Commission at 10302 Eaton Place, Ste. 100, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2215; contact the commission at (800) 368-3757, or visit their web site at WWW.CALEA.ORG

Phoenix Police Capture America's Most Wanted

On 06-12-08 at approximately 8:00PM, The Phoenix Police Department’s Major Offender Bureau captured one of Americas most wanted fugitives.

Nguyen Cuong Viet,  was featured on the television show “America’s Most Wanted” on March 22nd, 2008 after he was wanted for a Murder that took place in Orange County, California back on June 26th, 2005.

Phoenix Police Officers began developing information from an anonymous source on the location of Nguyen’s whereabouts.  Officers were able to track Nguyen to a home in Maricopa Arizona where they began surveillance on that home.

During the course of that surveillance, Nguyen stepped out of that home and was walking a dog. Phoenix Police Officers recognized Nguyen from file photos provided by the television show and Homicide investigators in California. Nguyen was then immediately taken into custody without incident and transported to Phoenix Police Headquarters where he was fingerprinted and booked into MCSO jail on a Fugitive from Justice Warrant.

Today, 06-18-08, Orange County Investigators took custody of Nguyen and transported him back to California where he now will stand trial for the 2005 Murder.

Take Back Your Neighborhood Prevent Gun Violence

The city of Phoenix, including Mayor Phil Gordon and Council members Michael Johnson and Michael Nowakowski, in conjunction with Phoenix Police Department, ATF, the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office, Maricopa County and Silent Witness, have joined forces to initiate a grassroots campaign aimed at reducing violent crimes in four selected neighborhoods in the South Mountain area.

Spearheading the effort is Arizonans for Gun Safety, a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to reducing gun deaths and injuries. In addition, several private individuals and companies have pledged their support, including APS, Gust Rosenfeld, Jerry Colangelo, Phoenix Community Alliance, SRP, the Arizona Republic and La Voz.

This theme of this grassroots effort is “Take Back Your Neighborhood, Prevent Gun Violence.” The four-week campaign will take place in June and will consist of bilingual media elements, including live radio broadcasts and public service announcements, newspaper ads, billboards and poster boards. In addition, a strong public relations campaign and grassroots efforts, including community events, will further promote the message within selected neighborhoods.
