2008 Police Honor Awards Ceremony
On February 29, 2008, the Phoenix Police Department held their most prestigious ceremony of the year which honored officers and citizens who performed exemplary service. Nearly 200 people were recognized for outstanding police work, lifesaving, merit, valor and much more. Sadly, this year’s ceremony also includes the department’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, for line-of-duty deaths and was presented to the widows of Officers George Cortez, Jr. and Nick Erfle. 2008 Employee Memorial Ceremony
The city of Phoenix pays tribute to six employees who died in the line of duty. The city of Phoenix is one of only a few major cities that hosts a public ceremony to recognize fallen employees. The employee memorial ceremony on PHX11 features an organ tribute played by 15-year-old Eric Fricke on the Orpheum Theatre’s Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, public reading of names by representatives from each of the fallen employees’ respective unions and an employee and family recessional leading to the city employee memorial site to unveil the names of the employees honored at this year’s ceremony.

Phoenix City Council Policy Sessions
Please check for replays for the May 6, 2008 Phoenix City Council Policy Session. The next policy session is scheduled for May 13, 2008 at 2 p.m.
    District 1 Councilwoman Thelda Williams "On The Issues"
Councilwoman Thelda Williams meets with two students recognized as the Outstanding Young Man and Woman for District 1. She'll discuss the selected Points of Pride, including one located in her district. Williams also learns about a kids' gun safety program held at the Pioneer Living History Village. To close the show, she'll highlight the various summer programs offered by the city's Parks and Recreation Department.
    District 2 Vice Mayor Peggy Neely "On The Issues"
Vice Mayor Peggy Neely is On the Road at the Toll Brothers' new Montevista community near 56th Street and Dixileta. The luxury homes feature more than 100 "green" amenities, including ecologically friendly building techniques, new technologies, recycled products and energy efficiency.
    District 3 Councilwoman Maria Baier "On The Issues"
Councilmember Maria Baier learns how to keep safe during the summer months, whether it be at home, the pool or the park. She highlights the new Sunnyslope Art Walk or "Second Saturdays" in her district and also discusses the city's Senior Companion Program.
    District 4 Councilman Tom Simplot "On The Issues"
In this month’s On the Issues, Councilman Tom Simplot features the new romantic comedy “Falling for Grace” and he meets with the film’s writer, producer, director and lead actress, Fay Ann Lee. Simplot also discusses new Phoenix School of Law in his district and the METRO Light Rail art program. To close the show, he’ll get an update on light rail.
    District 5 Councilman Claude Mattox
On this month's On the Issues, Councilman Claude Mattox will discuss the successful spring training season, the grand opening of the new YMCA in Maryvale and how the city is is fighting back against graffiti.
    District 6 Councilman Greg Stanton
Councilman Greg Stanton has Pat Dinkel of APS on the show to talk about the Solana Generating Station solar power plant that is currently in the works. He also tackles the problem of roof rats with residents who know the issue all too well. Finally, he welcomes Chicanos Por La Causa's newly-appointed president Edmundo Hidalgo to the show to talk about his plans for the organization.
    District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski
Councilman Michael Nowakowski honors the winners of the Outstanding Young Man/Young Woman in his district. He'll discuss the city's Summer Youth Work Experience Program and pay tribute to a man known as the Father of the West Valley, John F. Long. He'll also highlight the activities of the Willo Historic District, the 89th Avenue Neighborhood Block Watch and the Laveen Village Planning Committee.
   

District 8 Councilman Michael Johnson "On The Issues"
Councilman Michael Johnson features two organizations, the South Phoenix Healthy Start and the Phoenix Birthing Project, to discuss how women care for children before, during and after the pregnancy as well as ensuring healthy child during their first year. To close the show, he'll highlight an Urban Art Park project and a DUI campaign.
