City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture
21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
After School Initiative: The Phoenix Arts Collaborative

Participating Schools

Phoenix Elementary District provides the facilities, maintenance, staff resources and leadership at each of the 21st CCLCs. Two district teachers hired each session provide remedial and tutorial instruction for students most at-risk of not meeting academic standards in reading, mathematics and writing. At-risk students receive targeted assistance after-school, during interim sessions and during summer recess. The teachers' role is to provide direct instruction, tutoring and remediation in the academic areas to ensure that students master the Arizona academic standards. The district's role is to coordinate and provide services including facilities, equipment, maintenance and some contracted transportation. The district also provides test scores for evaluation purposes.

The Phoenix Elementary School District's P.E.E.R. after school program provides a recreation component at some sites that ensures a safe and nurturing environment for young children close to home. They can take part in team sports such as soccer or kickball or individual play such as hopscotch or martial arts.

In addition, the individual schools have many business, government and community partners that are currently contributing valuable resources and expertise. It is our plan to integrate these existing programs and services into the 21st Century Grant. Each school currently has school and community resources providing ESL classes for parents, technology classes for parents, Family Wellness Classes, before and after school day care, crisis intervention program, Head Start, tutoring program, strings classes and site-based councils.
