ARTISTS' INITIATIVE

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture is committed to supporting emerging Arizona artists and artists new to public art.  Temporary projects offer professional development opportunities for artists and exciting experiences for Phoenix residents.

Artists' Initiative 4 - Temporary Public Art Projects 2007
Four Arizona artists were selected to develop temporary projects for Artists' Initiative 4.

Michael Carroll's "Acousmatic": a soundscape installation in which the participant can, by tripping infrared triggers that play pre-recorded sounds, compose a musical piece. The sounds include melodic, harmonic, and percussive sounds and sounds from nature. They can be combined in an infinite variety of ways. The source of the sounds are hidden beneath gravel landscaping in Encanto Park.

Nick DeFord's "You Are Here": a labyrinth created from stones from Arizona in the shape of Arizona, ending with Phoenix in the center. It references the use of labyrinths in Native American petroglyphs found here in Arizona. The labyrinth is installed at Circle K Park and will remain there indefinitely.

Chloe Palmer's "Make": a collage video of workers mimicking the hand movements they make in creating products or doing their work. Its purpose is to connect the makers to the users of products. The video was displayed as a loop during the First Thursday Performances at the Paper Heart Gallery last October and at the Artlink First Friday DASH stop at Burton Barr Central Library also in October of 2007.

Adria Pecora's "Nets": was an abstract string/cord site-specific installation on a tennis court at G.R. Herberger Park. The clean lines and shadowed patterns of the installation created a study of movement, direction and space that relates to the game of tennis. "Nets" was installed to coincide with the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in 2007.
