Phoenix Human Relations Commission Awards

Each year the Phoenix Human Relations Commission, in collaboration with the city of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department, recognizes the accomplishments of Phoenix residents, including youth, who contribute significantly to creating a compassionate and socially just community.

The commission presented the Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream awards at the January 2010 Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Awards Breakfast presented by the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.

Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognizes one exceptional individual who has made Phoenix a better place to live through a lifelong dedication to promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights and enhancing the dignity of all people. In his 22-year tenure with the Phoenix City Council, Mr. Goode worked endlessly to ensure these rights for all residents. Guided by a deeply held belief in equality for all people, his lifetime exemplifies a powerful commitment to improving the quality of life in Phoenix, especially for young people.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Award

This award recognizes six individuals who exemplify the ideals of Dr. King through their personal commitment to human relations and social justice.

Eligibility Requirements

Nominees must live or work within the Phoenix city limits. Past award recipients and current elected officials, Phoenix Human Relations Commissioners and Awards Program Committee members are not eligible for nomination.
