Ability Counts Community and Student Recognition Awards

Ability Counts Community Recognition Awards Nominations
The Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues coordinates the annual Ability Counts Community Recognition Awards, designed to acknowledge extraordinary and innovative individuals/organizations who have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of people with disabilities in the city of Phoenix. Winners will receive special recognition by the mayor and City Council. The MCDI reserves the right to forgo the presentation of any award.

The deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008.

The award categories are:

Phoenix Mayor's Award
The Phoenix Mayor's Award recognizes a person with a disability for significantly contributing to the empowerment of people with disabilities. This individual will have displayed leadership in increasing public awareness of the issues and concerns affecting people with disabilities, establishing themselves as a role model by their commitment and dedication to the disability community and demonstrating a long-term commitment to advocacy for the disability community.

Don Aldrich Advocacy Award
This award was created in memory of Don Aldrich, a member of the Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues, who passed away in 1997. He was a leader in advocacy, inclusion and ensuring the civil rights of all people with disabilities. This award recognizes an outstanding individual who has demonstrated a life-long commitment to advocacy for people with disabilities, has worked tirelessly to promote equal access and is a strong proponent of civil rights for the Phoenix disability community. Nominees may or may not have a disability.

Architectural Accessibility Award
This award recognizes exceptional design that surpasses the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines in new construction or the creative elimination of architectural barriers and obstacles in existing facilities. The award recognizes architectural accessibility enhancements for persons with disabilities.

Employee of the Year Award
This award recognizes an individual with a disability who exemplifies the characteristics of a highly productive worker. The award is based on the employee's career achievements and outstanding job performance.

Employer of the Year Award
This award recognizes an employer for outstanding efforts to enhance employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Any business or organization that consistently displays efforts and support for independence through the employment and advancement of people with disabilities is eligible.

Ability Counts Student Recognition Awards Nominations
The Phoenix Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues coordinates the annual Ability Counts Student Recognition Awards. The program recognizes outstanding students with disabilities for their personal and academic achievements. The awards are given in the following categories: grades 1-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12.

Nominees must have a disability and reside in Phoenix or attend a school in Phoenix. Prior student award winners may not be nominated in the same category. Awards will be presented and nominees recognized by the mayor and City Council at a City Council meeting or school assembly. Students will be evaluated on their demonstration of personal motivation, response to challenges, and personal and educational achievements. The MCDI reserves the right to forgo the presentation of any award.

The deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008.
