Transit access

Public Transit ADA requirements require city contracted transit services to be accessible. It also requires that the city have a paratransit service to serve those who cannot use the bus because of their disability. More transit information is available regarding Dial-a-Ride, Ride-Share and bus transportation schedules and other transportation issues.

Public participation in city compliance

The ADA requires that the city ensure that people with disabilities are given the same opportunities as the general population to serve on commissions and boards. It also requires that the city receive public comment on issues affecting people with disabilities.

The city welcomes public participation. Bringing program, service, activity or facility issues to the Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues (MCDI) is one avenue by which the public can participate. The MCDI reviews city activities for access to people with disabilities. They review construction plans, city policies affecting the public, communication, education, transportation and more. They provide comments and suggestions to make the city more accessible.

The Equal Opportunity Department also staffs a Disability Resource Pool, which is a pool of contracted people, with and without disabilities, who provide disability advice regarding training, education, construction and other areas. The pool members are paid a per diem by the department requesting their services. Contact the Equal Opportunity Department at 602-262-7486/voice, 602-534-1557/TTY or 602-495-0517/fax for further information.
