Symphony Hall Renovation
Symphony Hall, originally constructed in 1972, is home to the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Opera and Ballet Arizona. It is also the site for Broadway touring companies, ballet and a variety of dance productions and appearances by popular entertainers, as well as the location for business seminars and convention general sessions.

In 2001, Phoenix voters approved $18.5 million in funding to renovate Symphony Hall. During the renovation, the three resident companies of Symphony Hall (Arizona Opera, Ballet Arizona and The Phoenix Symphony) held their performances at other venues, primarily the beautiful and historic Orpheum Theatre and the Dodge Theatre, in downtown Phoenix.

Installation of Seats
June 2005

The renovation of Symphony Hall was done at the same time as the first phase of the $600 million expansion of the Phoenix Convention Center. Combining these two projects accomplished two key objectives:
  1. Created major economies of scale, allowing a greater portion of the Symphony Hall project budget to be spent on physical building improvements.
  2. Minimized the impact of the Phoenix Convention Center construction on Symphony Hall patrons - the most disruptive construction was done when Symphony Hall was closed for renovations.
Symphony Hall was dramatically improved and the arts experience has been significantly enhanced. Renovation included:
  • Better accessibility for physically challenged patrons (ADA compliance)
  • Expanded lobby and interior upgrades
  • Easy access to the box office
  • All new seats
  • New carpeting
  • New wall finishes
  • New, quieter air conditioning and heating system
  • New roof
