  College Depot Now Open!
Free college planning and help navigating the life-long journey of education is now available at the Burton Barr Central Library through College Depot. The program will be open for the same hours as the library and aims to increase the college going rate for students of all ages in Phoenix. Come stop by the second floor to see the latest addition to the Burton Barr library and Phoenix Community. Below are a listing of workshops that are currently scheduled.   How to Pay for College: College Depot will be holding a 45 minute presentation with Diana Mateer from EdFund on how to pay for college. The presenation will take place at College Depot on the 2nd floor of the Burton Barr Library. The presentation will be held at 3pm on July 7. 21st Century Learning Skills: The College Depot will be holding a workshop covering skills which are necessary for the 21st century and your college career. Robert Olmos, a College Depot advisor will be hosting the workshop July 15 from 5:30 to 6:30pm on the Burton Barr Library's second floor. College 101: College 101 is a one hour workshop designed to help you make a smooth transition to college. This will be presented in the College Depot, by Robert Olmos, one of our College Depot Advisors. The event will take place on July 25 from 2-3pm on the second floor of the Burton Barr Library. College Online Scavenger Hunt: Silvia Valadez, an advisor at College Depot, will be holding an online scavenger hunt to show participants how to find the best preparation sites and where to learn about financial aid for higher education. The session will take place from 3-4pm on July 30 on the second floor of the Burton Barr Library. Call 602-261-8847 or email college.depot@phoenix.gov to make a reservation.

Sizzlin' Summer Saturdays at the Heard Museum: From exciting music and dance performances to an extravaganza of hands-on activities, artist demonstrations and free goody bags, Sizzlin’ Summer Saturdays gives kids and families a cool and creative way to spend July Saturdays. July 11, 18, 25, and August 1 from 10:30am to 3pm.

Adobe Youth Voices /What Kids Kids Can Do: International Photo Competition: Adobe Youth Voices and What Kids Kids Can Do invite youth around the world to submit photographs based on the theme of "Crisis and Hope," expressing themselves on both what is challenging and what gives hope in today's difficult world. Maximum award: Winning photographs will be showcased online, in a traveling exhibit, and in a book. Eligibility: all young people -- anywhere in the world -- between the ages of 12 and 19. Deadline: July 31, 2009.

Freedom Alliance Scholarships for Children of Servicemen and -women: Freedom Alliance Scholarships give financial assistance to sons and daughters of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Guardsmen who have been killed or permanently disabled (100 percent VA disability rating) in the line of duty, or who are currently classified as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action. Maximum award: one-year scholarships to undergraduates. Eligibility: high school seniors, high school graduates, or registered undergraduate students at an accredited college or post high school vocational/technical institution who are dependent sons or daughters of a soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, or Guardsman who was killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty or currently classified as a POW or MIA. Deadline: July 31, 2009..

2009 Youth Free Expression Film Contest: The 2009 Youth Free Expression Network Film Contest is open to filmmakers age 19 & younger who are living in the U.S. or its territories (but need not be citizens). To qualify, you must submit an original film of four minutes or less addressing the topic: "Free Speech in School (Does it Exist?)". Entries can be videos of any kind, including documentary, animation, experimental, or music video. The top three winners will be awarded cash prizes & the first place winner will receive a scholarship to the New York Film Academy. Deadline: August 14, 2009. Visit ncac.org for more information

By Kids for Kids/NYSE Foundation/K12: NYSE Financial Future Challenge: The NYSE Financial Future Challenge asks kids to come up with new ways to teach their peers about finance, money management, and investing in the stock market. Entries may include games, books, websites, videos, and other media that would help illuminate the fundamentals of the stock market, enhance financial literacy, and make it easy for young people to learn and even participate in the markets. Maximum award: $2,500 to invest in stocks, as well as special media attention at the NYSE. Eligibility: youth between the ages of 6 and 19 who reside in the United States, District of Columbia and U.S. territories and possessions. Deadline: August 31, 2009.

John F Kennedy Essay Contest for High School Students: The annual John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest invites high school students from across the nation to write an original essay about an elected official who has demonstrated political courage. Winning essayists will receive awards totaling up to $8,500. The first-place winner will be invited to accept the award at the Profile in Courage Award Ceremony hosted each May by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. Entries must be submitted by September 1, 2009.

The Student Conservation Association: Green Your School Contest: The Student Conservation Association's Green Your School Contest stimulates and/or identifies conservation service projects designed by high school students that improve, restore, beautify, or conserve their high school environment. Entries will be judged according to the following criteria: the project has or will improve the environmental health of the school; the project is sustainable; the project is initiated by students and engages other students, teachers, and school administrators; the submission itself is of high quality; and the project engaged the community. Maximum award: $5,000. Eligibility: projects must have been begun after August 1, 2008 and be student-designed. Deadline: October 9, 2009.
