Summary: The AAA Cares program offers students training and hands-on experience in basic business skills and practices. The 20-week, after school program began November 11 with 14 at-risk high school students from the Deer Valley Unified School District. The program covers topics such as computer skills, business etiquette, public speaking and interview skills. Each student in the program was assigned a volunteer mentor from AAA to offer encouragement and support with course participation. The culminating activity included having students present business proposals they had created to an audience of AAA employees, parents and educators.

Summary: The Arizona Diamondbacks have partnered with numerous Phoenix School Districts and an organization called Communities in Schools of Arizona (CISA) for nearly six years. Together, we have served thousands of students in Phoenix with academic enrichment, social advocacy, and vocational education. Through programs such as Line-Up for Learning, Cover to Cover and the Suns/ Diamondbacks Academy, the Diamondbacks have encouraged life long skills and values that will carry on with children as they become upstanding members of the Phoenix community.

Summary: For almost 40 years, the Back-to-School Clothing Drive Association has been providing new school outfits and uniforms to thousands of less fortunate children attending schools in Arizona. Each year, close to 10,000 children from school districts throughout the state arrive at the organization's annual distribution event to receive the necessary clothes, shoes, and school supplies to start school. With one employee, 2,500 volunteers, and 200 seamstresses, the Back-to-School Clothing Drive Association provides a boost of self-esteem and all the right tools for children to succeed in school.

Summary: Front-page news stories paint a bleak picture of a nursing and healthcare provider shortage that affects patients not only in Arizona, but throughout the nation and indeed across the world. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center (BTMC) has long been aware of this critical shortage. To help address the problem, BTMC worked with Greenway High School in Phoenix to create the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program Partnership. The purpose of the partnership is to provide local high school students with a hands-on introduction to the healthcare profession and encourage them to consider a career in nursing and other healthcare disciplines.

Summary: Ms. Kathy Shamley is a social studies teacher in Desert Vista High School in Ahwatukee. She is the coordinator for a student organization called Community Counts, where they help out people in the community who are in need. It was not until two years ago that her Community Counts organization adopted my third grade class at Wilson Primary School. Our school is predominantly made up of minorities who qualify for free breakfast and lunch aide. The DV students are such wonderful mentors to these students who crave the independent attention from older individuals. Our visits are academically based where they play educational games, read books, share stories, and work on computers. The Wilson students enjoy sharing time with them so much that they don’t even know that they are actually doing “school work”. My students have had interaction with these high school students monthly, developing a beautiful partnership.

Summary: Southwest Behavioral Health Services (Community Youth Development-CYDP) and the Roosevelt School District have been working together for more than 20 years. The CYD Program is currently at 7 schools in the district with a Prevention Specialist at each of these schools. Comprehensive school base prevention and counseling services are provided. Services target youth in grades k-8th. Programs are delivered to address mental health, substance abuse and violence. Programs and services are delivered through multiple strategies: life skills development, public information and scoial marketing, community education, training and staff development, and problem identification and referral.

Summary: The Safe Schools "focus on Excellence" Youth Program deters criminal activity among youth by providing students with activity oriented law related education, field trip experiences and guest speakers. The program is improving life for youth within the school and community by promoting cultural awareness, respect for education, the law and law enforcement and service to the community. This is the 7th successful year of the Safe Schools "Focus on Excellence" Youth Program with a partnership between Cesar E. Chavez Community School and the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department. The program benefits 650 students in Headstart - 8th grade along with their families.

Summary: The Garcia VIP Mentor Project matches staff from Maricopa County Juvenile Probation and Phoenix Police with at-risk students from Garcia Elementary School in the Murphy Elementary School District. The mentors/sponsors volunteer to spend time with their assigned students during lunch periods throughout the school year, encouraging and assisting student participants to development valuable life skills. Student participants discuss the challenges they face with their mentors, who help them to establish personal goals that can guide them toward meeting those challenges. Student participants and mentors review goal status weekly; mentors encourage academic success and enhancement of peer and family relationships.

Summary: A partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Dave Pratt Dental Clinic, Murphy School District and Arizona Dental A partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Dave Pratt Dental Clinic, Murphy School District and Arizona Dental Association was established to address and help reduce the number of school hours missed by children due to pain, and the long-term health problems resulting from poor oral hygiene for the underserved population in South Phoenix. This collaborative group of professionals representing the needs of children made a commitment to educate and address the dilemma of severe tooth decay in Phoenix-area children by increasing awareness and prevention through participation in “Give Kids a Smile Day”.

Summary: The Intel Corporation and Montebello School have a four-year partnership to promote the field of engineering, the importance of attending college, and the problem-solving processes that are the core of the engineering profession. Each year, approximately 25 engineers visit fourth through eighth grade classes (approximately 625 students) for a presentation on engineering, the importance of pursuing a college degree, and they lead an in-class design competition. Later in the day, selected students have lunch with engineers and do another design competition with engineers on their team. The Intel Corporation has donated $12,000 over the past four years to Montebello School.

These contributions include, but are not limited to: Organizing and funding Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs, Serving as a Principal for a Day at the Sevilla West School, Contributing personal funds for the purchase of a Smart Board, Organizing personal visit from Scott Flansburg, the Human Calculator, and is a Directors Circle Member of the Valley Youth Theatre.

Summary: Wal-Mart donated several thousand dollars to Laveen Elementary School. We used the money to buy white boards and overheads. By purchasing these items we were able to have an immediate and direct impact on the quality of education for those students at Laveen Elementary School. With Laveen Elementary School being such a big part of the community, Wal-Mart has had a big impact on our school and community.

Summary: Home Depot donated money and labor in order to fix up Laveen Elementary School's playground. On the day of the event over seventy Home Depot employees showed up. In addition, teachers, parents, and district office personnel helped shovel sand, paint equipment, spread gravel, spread red wood chips, and put together outdoor furniture. Since the completion of the project, Home Depot has donated two hundred dollars in gift cards. The gift cards were donated in order to help Laveen Elementary School to continue working on improving the appearance of the school grounds. With Laveen Elementary School being such a big part of the communiy, Home Depot had a big impact on our school and community.

Summary: Wells Fargo has been an active partner at Lowell School for the past 5 years. They have a strong commitment to Lowell School and its community. Wells Fargo employees wanted to collaborate specifically with the downtown community resulting in the financial institution being a part of the Lowell partnership with active participation from its community relations department. The employees of Wells Fargo lead by Vice-President of Government Relations, Dave Howell, have been instrumental in maintaining a visible presence on campus. Their partnership has committed more than funding, they are an extension of the Lowell family.

Summary: The Math Achievement Club by Rodel (MAC-Ro) is an initiative of the Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona in partnership with the Isaac Elementary School District and 88 districts throughout the state reaching 18,000 students. In Phoenix alone, 8,600 students at 36 schools in 15 school districts participate. MAC-Ro has a documented record of sigtnificantly raising student math schievement in high-poverty schools. The program provides a fun and motivating structure in which students learn mathematics. Based on sound educational research, the primary components of MAC-Ro include standards-based materials students, professional development for teachers and administrators and ongoing family involvement.

Summary: Within the last 3 years the Phoenix Rotary 100 has established itself as a major steward of the Murphy School District through its Centennial Project: The Field of Dreams. In 2005, Rotary International celebrated their Centennial- a hundred years of "Service above Self." It was in that year that the Rotary 100 focused on the Hamilton School and Murphy School District for their Centennial project- the Field of Dreams. This Field of Dreams includes a baseball diamondm football/soccer field, basketball court, track and general play area. The Field of Dreams prject was dedicated in October. 2004. it is located in the Hamilton School and serves all four schools with a total student population of over 2700 in the Murphy School District. The $1,000,000 + project was financed by the Rotarians of Phoenix Rotary 100 and grants from the NFL Grassroots Program, City of Phoenix Block Grant Prgram, Diamonback Charities, the Thunderbirds, Arizona Public Service, and the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority. In addition, the Phoenix Rotary 100 was instrumental in securing a $300,000 Rotary International Health, Hunger, and Humanity grant for furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the Murphy School District/ Phoenix Rotary 100 Education and Health Center. This was the first time in the history of Rotary International that this type of grant has been given to a project in a "developing" country.

Summary: ACSS and Desert Winds Elementary soar into their seventh year of an ongoing educational partnership, allowing 6th grade students to experience first hand the world of global aerospace technology through career opportunities and The Greatest Airplane Contest. A two-day project, Day 1 starts when the ACSS engineering team visits the 6th grade classrooms to give students an overview of the business, aerospace careers and how to make a well constructed paper airplane. Day 2 begins with the 6th graders touring the ACSS facility, learning the stages of product assembly – design, building, and marketing. Using their knowledge of aerodynamics, students work with aviation design experts in designing, folding and flying paper airplanes. Finishing out the day is an “in-flight meal” of hot dogs and chips in the cafeteria.

Summary: In a collaborative effort with Phoenix Workforce Connection's Summer Youth Program, Phoenix College is able to provide a unique summer youth Pharmacy Technician Program. The program is a 12 week program. The students meet for class twice per week for 3 hour session each on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9a-3-p; from 3-5p, they utilize the campus services to assist with their studies: math & science center for tutoring, the learning assistance center for study skills and tutoring, the library, etc. The Phoenix Workforce Connection office provides internships for the students at various local CVS pharmacies to shadow a pharmacist &/or pharmacy technician. This is our initial year of this new and unique partnership with Phoenix Workforce Connection's Summer Youth Program.

Summary: My third grade class at Wilson Primary School in the inner city Phoenix has had a partnership with Robin Hanna since 1999. She has been coming into my room to read books, play Bingo, teach cooking classes, and make beaded pins. She has made such difference in my students’ lives by providing them with opportunities to learn new skills. As you watch her interact with the students, the level of respect and enjoyment from both her and the students shine through. She’s also a wonderful candidate for recruiting other volunteers to come in the class. As we always say to each other, “We got them hooked!” It has been fabulous having Robin Hanna be a part of the Wilson Primary family.

Summary: The Rodel Exemplary Teacher Initiative will change our students' lives by addressing the need for great teachers in Arizona's neediest classrooms. Rodel created an innovative process to identify extraordinary teachers achieving exceptional success against all odds. They become Rodel Exemplary Teachers and models of what can be achieved. Rodel matches each winner with six promising student teachers. After being mentored by the best, these student teachers become the next generation of exceptional teachers. Overall, 59 Rodel Exemplary Teachers have been named, including 22 in Phoenix. If the program continues just six more years, Rodel graduates will reach 1 million students.

For the last seven years, SWA have been coming to my class interacting with the students monthly. Every visit is theme oriented and is usually holiday related. The staff of SWA prepares, demonstrates, and assists with the activities. During these visits, my students have opportunities to learn about our community, use of proper etiquette when interacting with adults, and time for individual attention from the community leaders. The students each year look forward to the friendship that they build with the SWA staff.

Through the hands on experiences of learning Chinese Kung Fu, traditional Chinese dance, calligraphy, painting, and other folk arts and crafts, students can enjoy and learn about Chinese culture, experience diversity, and gain a global perspective of our ever-changing world. This partnership builds bridges, bringing together people and generations in the Phoenix community and creating a lasting impact on our youth.

Summary: In a collaborative effort with Valle del Sol, Inc., Phoenix College is able to provide a unique summer youth leadership development program for Hispanic/Latino youth. The program is 12 weeks in length. Each session focusses on leadership principles and values. Each session has a guest speaker focus on specific qualities and elements of becoming a leader in our community. The guest speakers range from former state senators, ASU professor, Phoenix College professors, Phoenix councilman, community outreach coordinators, media and newspaper writers & columnists, etc. At the conclusion of the program, a graduation ceremony is held at Phoenix College and students will earn one college credit.
