Election Board Worker Information

We encourage you to consider becoming a member of the proud team of Election Board Workers who work to ensure that all electors within the City of Phoenix get the chance to cast their votes in a fair and efficient manner. Elections would prove to be an impossible task without the assistance of residents within the City of Phoenix.

Requirements

To be an Election Board Worker for the City of Phoenix, you must be a registered voter residing in the City of Phoenix at least 29 days before the scheduled City Election.

If you are not currently registered to vote, visit the Maricopa County Recorder’s web site (recorder.maricopa.gov) where you can register on line or print a Voter Registration Form. To request a voter registration form by mail, call 602-506-1511, TTY 602-506-2348.

Bilingual Workers Needed

The National Voting Rights Act requires that the City of Phoenix provide Spanish language assistance to voters throughout the electoral process. Our goal is to try to provide a bilingual Election Board Worker in as many of the voting precincts as possible. Bilingual board workers help ensure that Spanish speaking voters understand the voting process. Because of the added responsibility of assisting the voters in Spanish, there is an additional brief session at the end of the mandatory board worker instruction class that covers the roles and responsibilities of the bilingual Election Board Worker. All bilingual board workers will receive an additional $5.00 for attending this session.

Duties

Election Board Workers conduct the voting in the precincts. There are five members on each election board – an inspector, two judges and two clerks. The Board is responsible for preparing the polling place for voting that involves posting signs, setting up the voting area and ensuring all voting materials are available. The workers also assist voters with the election process, close the polling place at the end of the day and then deliver the voted ballots to a receiving location. Bilingual poll workers are also needed to assist voters whose primary language is not English.

Election Dates

We need workers for all elections. The regular Phoenix elections for Mayor and City Council are held in September and November (Runoff) of odd-numbered years. Special elections may be ordered by the City Council. State law (A.R.S. § 16-204) permits elections to be held on only four dates each year:

    1. The second Tuesday in March.
    2. The third Tuesday in May.
    3. The eighth Tuesday before the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
    4. The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
