AERIAL PHOTOS NEEDED OF DOWNTOWN PHOENIX
The Phoenix Film Office is working with a project that is seeking photos of downtown Phoenix from the early 1990’s. Production takes place in the downtown area during this time period and they are trying to make it as authentic as possible. Obviously there have been many changes to our downtown in the past 15 years, so the production is trying to determine what was or wasn’t here and cheat the camera accordingly.

AUDITIONING FOR COMMERCIALS: Commercial acting is the bread and butter work for actors in this market, yet few actors seem to know how to audition for them. I see many talented actors that don't know how to audition for commercials. There are so many small things that can make a BIG difference. The question is, do you know what these things are and do you know WHY they are important? As a casting director, I see what goes on behind the scenes, I hear what the producers say, and what they like or don't like. I can help you understand what to do to get more parts in commercials, based on that information. You will have lots of time on camera to work on specific skills. This is not a fluff and puff class. It is hands on and practical. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or have years of experience, I guarantee you will learn things in my workshop that you have never learned before. With lots of time on camera, and individual feedback, you can't afford to miss this intensive one-day workshop. For actors of all levels who are 15 or older.
TO REGISTER or TO GET MORE INFO: Email us at GFCworkshops@gmail.com for more info or to register. Workshops are taught by Arizon a's #1 Casting Director, Faith Hibbs-Clark, CSA and fill quickly. Space is limited.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Faith Hibbs- Clark, CSA, is a full member of the Casting Society of America and owner and head casting director for Good Faith Casting, with offices in Los Angeles and Phoenix. Film casting credits include (to name a few) "Jarhead", "First Daughter", "The Whistler", "Wild Seven", "Black Cloud," "The Savages" starring Phillip Seymor Hoffmann and Laura Linney (now in theaters), Universal Picture/Imagine Entertainment film "Kids in America" starring Topher Grace (opening in January). "HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER" - FREE SCREENING
(opens nationwide May 16th)
When: May 13th, 7:30pm
Where: Bullpitt Auditorium, 1222 West Thomas Road (free parking in the West parking lot that fronts Thomas Road)
For more information: NALIP Phoenix Board Member James E. Garcia, 602-460-1374 or jgarcia@americanlatino.net
The film stars America Ferrera, Elizabeth Pea, and Lucy Gallardo in a "tender comedy of sensual awakening". It was written and directed by Georgina Garcia Riedel (A graduate of the University of Arizona) and filmed in Arizona. It lovingly explores the sensuality, longing and self-realization in three generations of single women in a Mexican American family as their romantic drought turns into a drenching over a hot, dusty summer in the southwest.
As a sweltering summer stretches over a sun-bleached Arizona border town, Doa Genoveva (Lucy Gallardo), the Garcia family matriarch, decides to buy a car. The only catch is that she doesn't know how to drive. When she enlists Don Pedro's (Jorge Cervera Jr.) teaching skills, sparks begin to fly. Her daughter, Lolita, played with deadpan poignancy by Elizabeth Pea, seems to have hit a dry spell, until things start to sizzle at the butcher shop where she works. Meanwhile Lolita's teenage daughter, a radiant America Ferrera, engineers an awakening all her own. Cervera Jr., Steven Bauer, Rick Najera and newcomer Leo Minaya play the male interests who jump-start a multi-generational sexual revolution.
The film has been screened internationally and at Sundance and the New York and Los Angeles Latino Film Festivals and will open in 54 theatres across the U.S.

Phoenix Film Office at Locations EXPO in Santa Monica
The Phoenix Film Office, along with the State of Arizona and other film commissions from around the state, participated in Locations EXPO in Santa Monica from 4/10 thru 4/12. This important industry event has become a tradition for the Film, Television and Commercial Industry, as a one stop shop venue for locations and filming incentives.
While the totals have not been tallied yet for this year, last year there were over 3,300 attendees including studio executives, cinematographers, producers, directors and locations scouts from all segments of the industry. These industry professionals consider this venue an important vehicle for all their locations and location service decisions.
The Phoenix Film Office met with several producers who were thinking of coming to Phoenix or who were already in our program and will begin setting up offices in the coming months. A number of advertising companies that I met with were unaware of the incentive program we have specifically for this area of the industry (as well as music videos) so I hope and assume they will be contacting us about future projects after they were explained the program.
While we were pitching the state and Phoenix, millions and millions of dollars had rolled back into our program as of 4/11 since many productions that did not begin production were returning their credits. Many of the Producers we spoke with commented that they were not looking at Arizona since the tax credits were committed already for the year, but we informed them that our legislation had changed and this allowed $22 Million to be returned. Coupled with a somewhat short list, we all did our best to encourage these producers to commit to Arizona and apply for the program.
Congratulations to Arizona Black Film Showcase founder, Joanna de'Shay!
Joanna will be honored at the "Positively Powerful Women" retreat taking place May 16th to May 17th, 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Retreat leader Dr. Joel Martin had this to say about Joanna: "Your annual, competitive film showcase has supported, celebrated, and promoted the dynamic works of Black filmmakers locally and nationally for the past seven years. You embody what the Positively Powerful Women Celebrate! Event stands for."the empowerment of all women and the celebration of their accomplishments in ways that inspire others to live their dreams."
The Phoenix Film Office Congratulates Joanna de'Shay on her accomplishment!

IFP Independent Film Labs - Deadlines March 7 (Documentary) & April 11 (Narrative)
Given the pivotal role that festivals play in launching emerging filmmakers, IFP's Rough Cut Labs are designed to assist in tackling the creative and technical challenges of completing projects before they are submitted to festivals. Led by seasoned independent producers, the Labs help independent filmmakers achieve the full potential of their material prior to industry exposure by providing four days of feedback and advice on the specific technical, creative and post-production issues such as editing, music selection and scoring, festival and press strategy, sales, marketing and distribution.
The program is open to all first-time, narrative & documentary feature filmmakers who have completed the majority of principal photography. As a commitment to diversity, IFP seeks to ensure that at least 50% of participating projects have an inclusive range of races, genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities and physical abilities in key creative positions.
The Documentary Rough Cut Lab (May 6 - 9, 2008) and Narrative Rough Cut Lab (June 10-13, 2008) are held in New York City. Full criteria and on-line application available at http://www.ifp.org/labs.

AZ Black Film Showcase
The 2008 Arizona Black Film Showcase is proud to host the Arizona premiere of the Picture Palace Films production "Kings Of The Evening." This award-winning drama by director Andrew P. Jones will make its Arizona debut March 27th, 2008 during opening night festivities starting at 6:00 pm at the AMC Theaters-Arizona Center in downtown Phoenix.
Based on true events, "Kings of the Evening" stars model-actor Tyson Beckford (Bravo's "Make Me A Supermodel"), Emmy winning actress Lynn Whitfield ("The Josephine Baker Story," "Eve's Bayou," "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate"), and veteran stage and screen actor Glynn Turman ("A Raisin In The Sun," "Cooley High," "A Different World"). The film revolves around five strangers thrown together in a dilapidated boarding house in the midst of the Great Depression. Though times are tough and spirits are low, the strangers find escapism in a unique competition -- an underground fashion contest for which the prize is far greater than the five-dollar pot that awaits the winner; it's the chance to feel like a king, if just for an evening.
Members of the "Kings Of The Evening" cast and crew have been invited to participate in a question and answer session immediately following the film's screening. Local Phoenix film critic and media personality Gayle Bass will moderate the Q&A session. Bass, a member of The Phoenix Film Critics Society, is best known in Valley for her work on KTAR-FM & AM News Talk Radio, and on KTVK-3TV's "Your Life A To Z."
The 2008 Arizona Black Film Showcase will take place from March 27th through March 30th, 2008 with workshop panels, film screenings and special guests throughout the three-day event. Filmmakers and film fans are encouraged to take advantage of the programs and networking opportunities designed to expand their knowledge of the film industry and showcase their work.
Tickets for the 2008 Arizona Black Film Showcase are currently available. Reserve your tickets today. Log on to http://www.azblackfilm.com for more information about ticket purchase and Showcase information.
