SOLID WASTE FEE INCREASE - MARCH 16, 2009
Question (Q): What is the new fee?
Answer (A): As of March 16, 2009, the monthly solid waste service base fee will be $26.80 rather than $25.45 (an increase of $1.35 per month or approximately 4%).
Q: What does this fee pay for?
A: The base fee includes weekly-contained collection of garbage and recyclables, quarterly bulk trash collection, transportation and disposal costs, repair and replacement of containers and illegal dumping prevention programs. The fee also supports numerous solid waste environmental programs such as the household hazardous waste programs, appliance/electronics recycling programs and code enforcement activities. The fee supports the operation of the city’s landfill and two transfer stations. For a more detailed list of solid waste services, click here.
Q: Why has the fee gone up?
A: The increase is necessary to keep pace with inflation and maintain existing environmental programs and infrastructure.
Q: Who approved this fee?
A: The Public Works Department makes a recommendation after careful consideration and then it goes through a review process to a City Council subcommittee during a public forum. If the fee increase is found to be justified then it goes to the full City Council for final approval.
Q: Did the fees go up at the transfer stations?
A: The commercial rate fee at the disposal facilities will be $38.25/ton (an increase of $2 per ton).
Q: When was the last solid waste service fee increase:
