Bag and Tie Your Garbage and Grass!
Phoenix City Code requires that household solid waste and grass (NOT recyclables or bulk trash) be bagged and tied before being placed in solid waste containers. Solid waste also needs to be drained of all liquids and tied in waterproof bags before being placed in your green/black solid waste garbage container. For example, many residents use the plastic grocery bags to line garbage cans. Removing that bag, tying the handles together snugly, then placing it in the garbage allows residents to abide by Code requirements. If you would like to know more about the Phoenix City Code and the sections that apply to solid waste, click here and read about solid waste (garbage) and recyclable container requirements.
Why "Bag and Tie"? The bagging of garbage and grass is a requirement from Maricopa County to keep control of insects, rodents or other "vectors" that can transmit diseases. For example, the common housefly can reproduce in a matter of days and especially likes unbagged grass to lay its eggs. Bagging also keeps control of odors as well as keeping the inside of your garbage container clean.
