What is the HOPE VI Project?
HOPE is an acronym for Homeownership Opportunities for People Everywhere. The HOPE VI Project is a federal grant-funded program created to rebuild old and/or severely distressed public housing. The primary goals include revitalizing neighborhoods, providing services that enhance the lives of residents and creating a long-term investment in communities.
Why was Matthew Henson chosen?
Matthew Henson housing units are more than 50 years old and obsolete. The HOPE VI Project will build new, larger and more energy efficient public housing units and provide a variety of homeownership and affordable rental opportunities. The project plans include youth and senior programs for area residents and a job placement center with training and educational resources. By revitalizing the housing in the area, the project will attract new retail and commercial businesses to the neighborhood. What are the project boundaries?
The HOPE VI project will focus on the area between 7th and 15th avenues, Grant and Pima streets. A lot of preparation and planning is necessary before we can actually begin construction. In December 2002, the city selected McCormack, Baron, Salazar as the project's Master Developer. The role of the Master Developer is to create specific plans for the new Matthew Henson housing and the surrounding area. How can I get involved and learn more?
Input from the community is essential to the success of the HOPE VI project. If you would like to get involved or know more about the project, call 602-534-3561.
