WHO NEEDS AFFORDABLE HOUSING?
Who needs an affordable place to live? More people
than you might expect. A variety of residents who live and work in
Phoenix need an affordable place to live. Oftentimes, even full-time
employees who add to our community's quality of life such as an office
clerk, recent graduate, bus operator, school teacher, senior resident
and childcare provider, struggle to find quality housing they can afford.
WHAT IS AFFORDABLE HOUSING?
Affordable housing is defined by both cost and quality,
and is considered affordable if it costs no more than 30 percent of
a family's gross income. A family of three living on an annual median
income of $31,500 can afford to pay no more than $788 a month (including
utilities) for a two-bedroom residence. The median price for a resale
Valley home is about $144,900. Even with a low six percent interest
rate on a 30-year mortgage, the estimated monthly payment on a
typical home at $1,067. The quality of an affordable home includes
safety, proper maintenance and space adequate to accommodate the family.
