The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of tasks while learning the skills required to qualify for an entry level clerical position. The initial assignment is of a routine nature, but as an employee completes a structured training program, assignments become more difficult and the employee is expected to use greater initiative and judgment. Assignments are received orally or in writing; instructions on and review of assignments are quite complete in the beginning, but become more general as experience is acquired. At the end of one year of training, employees should be eligible by testing or performance evaluation for entry level Library Clerk, Clerk and Typist classifications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Participates in a structured training program;
- Learns to type routine documents and forms;
- Learns to operate standard office equipment;
- Enters data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Operate standard office equipment such as keyboard devices, calculator, copy machine, and FAX machine.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Learn job-related materials primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Move light objects weighing less than 20 pounds distances 20 feet or less.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Demonstrated ability to do or learn to do routine clerical work, as shown by prior training and experience or through examination. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
