The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform varied clerical tasks of average difficulty which require the application of judgment based on knowledge of office procedures and on-the-job experience. Where work is repetitive, there is an added accountability for meeting deadlines and quality of the final product. The more difficult work is performed under close supervision. Advice is given to a Clerk II on unusually difficult or important matters and work is evaluated based upon results. Some positions check the work of other employees, assist with routine details, and assist in training new employees. The greater variety and difficulty of assignments and the greater independence with which assignments are performed distinguish this class from the class of Clerk I.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Greets, provides information to, makes referrals, and answers customer complaints at a public service counter;
- Collects work related information, reports, and other material and assembles this data into file folders for use by other employees;
- Purges office files and prepares material for permanent storage;
- Operates office equipment needed to perform clerical assignments;
- Files office material and retrieves file folders for use by staff as requested;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Business arithmetic.
- Modern office practices, procedure, and equipment.
- Operate standard office equipment such as keyboard devices, calculators, and related office equipment.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, or public using a telephone and in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
- Perform alphabetical and numerical filing.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements to operate office equipment.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Lift arms and reach above shoulder height to retrieve or place files or books on shelves four feet or higher.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly to retrieve files or books from low shelves.
- Work cooperatively with others employees and the public.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of clerical experience or at the level of Clerk I. Other combinations of education and experience that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
