DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform routine beginning level clerical work which requires skilled typing ability. Detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments, and work is reviewed in process or upon completion for accuracy. As employees gain experience, competence, and knowledge of procedures, they work with increasing independence. Assignments of progressively increasing difficulty are made when the employee has mastered the more routine assignments. A Typist I may check the work of other clerks for accuracy and advise new employees on how to handle work problems, but does not exercise regular supervision over others. This class is distinguished from Typist II by the less complex and more repetitive nature of assignments and the closer supervision under which work is performed. A Typist I typically works as part of a team in a centralized secretarial operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Types documents from clear copy, rough draft, or dictation equipment;
- Sorts, indexes, and files materials alphabetically and numerically, according to established procedures;
- Logs reports and other information into binders, card files, or other records;
- Acts as a receptionist, furnishing routine information in response to general phone inquiries or visitors;
- Opens, processes, and routes daily mail;
- Operates common office equipment incidental to clerical assignments;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Proper business English, spelling, and grammar.
- Office practices, procedures, and equipment operations.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Operate a duplicating machine requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements to provide needed copies.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Operate a typewriter or other keyboard device.
- Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
- Learn assigned tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routine.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Sort, separate, arrange, file, or distribute incoming or outgoing mail, products or material.
- Move light objects weighing less than 20 pounds such as mail, supplies, and files.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to file materials.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience performing basic clerical work, including training in typing. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
