DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

Positions in this assignment regularly perform specialized computer work, usually involving various desktop applications, in addition to secretarial support duties. This work is in addition to the more standard uses of desktop applications typically used by the Secretary II classification, such as word processing, calendaring, electronic mail, and basic data maintenance. The work of positions in this assignment typically involves an advanced usage of the more complex applications, such as spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing software, and similar applications. Examples of work include developing, customizing, and maintaining desktop databases that have several interrelated tables; producing customized queries and reports from databases; establishing and maintaining spreadsheets and manipulating the data to produce statistical summaries or charts; and desktop publishing various graphical/statistical reports with customized layouts, newsletters, brochures, and other presentation materials.

This assignment is distinguished from the base classification in that it: 1) requires an advanced level of knowledge of applications, beyond typical office automation functions, 2) regularly (e.g., daily) performs work that requires this advanced know-how, 3) involves assignments and projects that require a higher level of independent problem solving and critical judgment in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data, and the appropriateness and effectivess of presentation material. Positions in this assignment typically spend 60%-75% of their time performing these specialized computer duties and projects, with the remainder spent using standard office automation applications for general secretarial duties.
