MICROGRAPHICS OPERATOR
JOB CODE 00420
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate all cameras, duplicators, mounters, and splicers in the Micrographics Services and Records Section. Incumbents are responsible for working independently on a production basis. General supervision and work assignments are received from, and results are reviewed by, a Records Clerk III or other supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Processes microfilm by mixing chemicals and using a darkroom to develop exposed film;
- Inspects processed microfilm for technical quality using a magnifying viewer;
- Cleans and performs routine maintenance of microfilming equipment by keeping areas and equipment dust free, and by using small hand tools to make minor adjustments or to change small parts such as light bulbs;
- Operates all microfilm cameras for photographing documents, maps, etc., in a wide variety of sizes and from different forms (e.g., loose legal documents, bound reports, rolled maps, etc.);
- Sorts documents to be microfilmed numerically, chronologically, and alphabetically;
- Indexes and dates boxes of microfilm and enters data into Computer Inventory Record;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Policies and procedures for maintaining a computerized and physical microfilm storage and retrieval system.
- Preventive maintenance techniques for microfilm equipment.
- Correct microfilming technique.
Ability to:
- The operation of all microfilm equipment used to photograph, process, and finish a technically accurate final product.
- Work with chemicals that are used to develop microfilm using normal protective equipment, and dispose of waste material in accordance with City ordinances.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning mainly takes place in an on-the-job training setting.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time to operate cameras, splicers, and to mount film.
- Follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Make precise arm-hand positioning movements in the operation of cameras, splicers, mounters, etc.
- File materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically.
- Communicate orally with co-workers, customers, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings.
- Enter data or information into a terminal or PC using a keyboard device.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience operating microfilming equipment and six months of clerical experience performing work that required accuracy with details. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
