DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate motor vehicles, including automobiles and heavy duty vans, to transport mail, materials, supplies, and personnel on a daily assigned route. Employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation and routine maintenance of delivery vehicles. Daily tasks and delivery routes are assigned by a supervisor, however, when actually delivering materials, work is performed without immediate supervision. Performance is evaluated upon results.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates an automobile, small truck or delivery van to transport mail, books, supplies, equipment and other materials to designated facilities;
- Makes deliveries to specific departments, offices or persons;
- Picks up items from designated facilities for immediate, next day or future delivery;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in motor vehicle operation.
- Geography of the community.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Move heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds distances more than 20 feet.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other employees.
Additional Requirements:
- Positions require the use of the personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months experience operating motor vehicles heavier than ordinary passenger vehicles. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
