POLICE CODING CLERK
JOB CODE 01260
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to read, collect, and encode data from police officers' departmental and supplemental reports into computer databases. The information encoded relates to types of crimes or activities, locations, time of day, classification of property, suspect and/or victim. This information is used to prepare several standard reports. Work is performed under the supervision of a civilian supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Reads reports and determines appropriate offense category;
- Codes data into various computer databases;
- Sorts and logs departmental reports and supplemental reports;
- Corrects missing or miscoded data;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Police offense codes.
- Police officer terminology.
- Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Learn job-related materials primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Appointments to positions in the Police Department are subject to meeting appropriate polygraph and background standards.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience performing specialized clerical work involving the receipt, filing, retrieving, reporting, and processing of records on criminal justice activities. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
