LIBRARY CLERK I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a wide variety of simple manual and clerical tasks in a library facility. An employee in this class requires no previous training or special knowledge of library routine, other than that received on the job. This class is differentiated from Library Page by the wider variety of tasks performed or by the more specialized work assigned. This class works under the supervision of a Librarian II*Lead or other supervisor who reviews work in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sorts, shelves, and files various library material accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric);
- Reads shelves for accuracy and reshelves misplaced items;
- Unpacks and packs boxes of books returned from or to be returned to other library agencies;
- Operates Integrated On-Line System computer terminal using a keyboard or scanner to perform routine support tasks such as location changing and checking in or out library materials;
- Retrieves library materials from public and non-public stack areas for library staff or library users;
- Prepares library materials for circulation by attaching labels, pockets, and plastic jackets;
- Boxes or bundles forms, tapes, or other material for distribution or mailing;
- Sorts, separates, arranges, files or distributes incoming mail, products or material;
- Prepares books and periodicals for commercial binding using a personal computer and bindery software and inserts theft detection strips in selected library materials when assigned to the Technical Services Division;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements and remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time when assigned to the Technical Services Division.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to the incumbent or others.
- Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements that including lifting books on a continuous basis for up to an hour at a time and for up to five hours in an eight hour shift.
- Organize, prioritize, and pace duties and tasks throughout an eight hour work shift and a weekly schedule.
- Work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
- Push a wheeled cart weighing up to 125 pounds across 70 feet of carpeted floor area for up to one continuous hour up to five times per day.
- Reach overhead to shelve books weighing up to three pounds.
- Bend and kneel to reach books on bottom floor-level shelf.
- Pack boxes of books up to five times per week.
- Stand for up to one continuous hour up to three hours per day while performing a variety of jobs such as sorting books.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience performing basic clerical duties. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
