LIBRARY CLERK II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform clerical assignments in a library facility which require the exercise of judgment based upon on-the-job experience. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of each new work assignment, but employees work with independence after becoming familiar with particular procedures. The independent responsibility for a variety of clerical procedures and extensive public contact distinguish this class from Library Clerk I. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Library Assistant or Interlibrary Loan Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Answers library users' inquiries and refers persons requiring professional library assistance to the appropriate staff member;
- Files papers and cards alphabetically;
- Retrieves library materials from public and non-public stack areas for library staff or library users;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Interlibrary Loan- Completes information for interlibrary loan requests on appropriate City form;
- Enters and retrieves information on the Integrated On-Line System or other computerized bibliographic and cataloging system using a keyboard in order to determine availability and make requests for library materials;
- Retrieves materials from the Central Library collection to fill interlibrary loan request.
Magazines and Newspapers- Labels periodicals, microforms, and boxes of library materials prior to circulation or storage;
- Discards, replaces, and rotates the use of magazines and newspapers;
- Assists library users in the use of reference material and specialized library equipment such as personal computers, printers, and microform readers/printers;
- Sorts and shelves library materials according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric);
- Enters, updates, and deletes magazine collection information contained in personal computer databases by operating a keyboard;
- Inserts theft detection strips in library materials.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Type accurately at a moderate rate of speed.
- Sort and file alphabetically.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Learn how to efficiently operate specialized library equipment.
- Communicate in the English language with employees or the public by phone or in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written materials.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of clerical experience, one of which is in a library facility or at the level of Library Clerk I. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
