DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform clerical tasks of average difficulty which require typing and clerical skills in a variety of work situations. Work is accomplished with considerable independence. Some positions train and check the work of Library Clerks I, but do not exercise regular supervision over others. This class is differentiated from the Library Clerk II class by the greater variety and difficulty of assignments and the greater responsibility for actions taken. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Tabulates book orders and maintains statistical record of book budget expenditures;
- Types various documents such as letters, memos and reports;
- Collects and compiles statistics for unit and types or writes simple statistical or financial reports;
- Prepares time sheets and payroll for unit under the direction of the unit supervisor;
- Performs inventory control for unit and orders supplies as needed;
- Sorts mail and places into centralized mail bins or delivers to recipients;
- Operates an Integrated On-Line System computer terminal by using a keyboard or scanner to check in new books or perform other related functions;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Business English and spelling.
- Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Type accurately at a moderate rate of speed.
- Sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Communicate in the English language by phone with City employees and the public.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written materials.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of diversified clerical experience, including two years in a library setting (one year at the level of Library Clerk II). Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
