LIBRARY CIRCULATION ATTENDANT II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform varied clerical tasks at a circulation desk in either the Central Library or in one of the branch libraries and to exercise limited supervision over the Library Circulation Attendant I. Work is accomplished with considerable independence and requires judgment based upon knowledge of library procedures and on-the-job experience. Incumbents train Library Clerks I and Library Circulation Attendants I in operating the computerized circulation system and in library circulation policies and procedures. The limited supervisory duties and the greater independence with which the duties are performed differentiate this class from Library Circulation Attendants I. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Clerical Supervisor, Library Circulation Attendant III, or Librarian III, who reviews work through discussion of results to be achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Trains Library Clerks I and Library Circulation Attendants I in the operation of library circulation equipment and procedures and policies;
- Counts cash receipts, reconciles against cash register tape, writes information onto a cash report, and follows written procedures for submittal;
- Checks library materials in and out, and enters transaction records into a computer data base using a keyboard or scanner;
- Inspects incoming materials for damage;
- Explains library card rules to library users, inspects users' identification and issues library cards;
- Retrieves information from a computer using a keyboard and notifies library users of overdue and lost books;
- Calculates fines and collects library charges from library users;
- Answers library users' questions and explains library circulation policies regarding overdue materials, reserving library materials and related policies;
- Refers library users requiring professional assistance to the appropriate staff person;
- Resolves difficult or unusual library user problems related to the circulation function;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Library circulation system and procedures.
- Business English and spelling.
- Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Train employees in circulation desk procedures and policies.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Make simple arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements, such as checking in books and operating a computer keyboard or scanner.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly over time.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years clerical experience, including one year working at a library circulation desk or one year at the level of Library Circulation Attendant I. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
