LIBRARY CIRCULATION ATTENDANT III

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise the circulation activities of a major branch library. Supervision is exercised over Library Circulation Attendants I and II engaged in varied clerical duties such as assisting library users in obtaining library cards, paying library charges, and checking materials in and out of the library. Responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties differentiates this class from Library Circulation Attendant II. General supervision is received from the library branch supervisor, a Librarian III or IV.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises, selects, and evaluates Library Circulation Attendants;
- Trains Library Circulation Attendants on circulation procedures and policies;
- Plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the circulation desk to ensure coverage and quality service;
- Keeps accurate, up-to-date records of work time, leave and vacation for assigned staff;
- Checks library materials in and out and enters transaction records into a computer data base using a keyboard or scanner;
- Consults computer data base using a keyboard in order to notify library users of charges for overdue books and lost books;
- Answers library users' questions and explains library circulation policies and library card rules;
- Resolves difficult or unusual library user problems related to the circulation function;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Principles and practices of supervision and public relations.
- Procedures and policies of library circulation.
- Standard usage of English language, spelling accuracy, and fundamentals of arithmetic.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Interpret and make decisions in conformance with regulations and department policies.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Make repetitive or continuous arm-hand movements, such as checking in books and operating a computer keyboard or scanner.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment such as a computer terminal, electric typewriter, calculator, and cash register.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of library clerical experience, including one year of experience at a circulation desk with limited supervisory responsibilities (one year at the level of Library Circulation Attendant II). Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
