FIRE COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise fire communications activities including the work of Communications Supervisors who are responsible for receiving and dispatching requests for firefighting, emergency medical services, and emergency transportation. The Fire Communications Coordinator is responsible for training and monitoring supervisors in the following areas: operation of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) equipment; handling of personnel problems; operation of the training program; and maintaining security of the area and associated communications equipment. The incumbent must have the ability to analyze situations quickly and respond with a reasonable course of action within Departmental guidelines. The Fire Communications Coordinator is also responsible for administrative functions of the section, including inventory and budgeting. The Coordinator exercises considerable independent judgment in accomplishing the work, and briefs the Communications Division Chief and other command officers on the unusual activities and major incidents that occur. Work is reviewed by the Communications Division Chief.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises employees involved in the dispatch of firefighting, emergency medical service, and emergency transportation personnel in the Deployment and Technical Services Section of the Fire Department;
- Manages shift assignments and transfer requests;
- Resolves problems involved in the administration and supervision of the fire communications system;
- Listens to taped emergency calls to determine compliance with operations standards or to perform critiques;
- Notifies the Communications Division Chief and other command officers of exceptional incidents;
- Instructs Fire Communications Supervisors in proper communications procedures;
- Formulates and writes procedural changes;
- Investigates and responds to citizen complaints;
- Serves as the liaison between the Deployment and Technical Services Section and other departmental sections;
- Writes and submits activity, productivity, personnel, and quarterly reports;
- Responds to the Deployment Center during greater alarms or periods of high emergency activity;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as communications operations manuals.

- Exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
- Obtain and act on information quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
- Observe or monitor people's behavior, or objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thought using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain at the time of hire and maintain the Phoenix Fire Department Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of experience in the use of computer aided dispatch equipment in public safety dispatching, which includes one year of supervisory experience in fire emergency dispatching. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
