MOBILE DISPATCHER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate the mobile service base radio, diagnose equipment malfunctions and dispatch service personnel and equipment to repair equipment in the field or to tow equipment to one of the service centers. Work includes coordinating, scheduling and setting work priorities for mobile repair services. Mobile Dispatchers work under the general supervision of an Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates the base radio and maintains radio contact with all mobile service units;
- Receives requests for service over the radio and telephone;
- Makes verbal inquiries in order to diagnose equipment malfunctions;
- Dispatches proper mobile repair unit or wrecker according to the description of the malfunction obtained from the operator;
- Schedules the work of Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Tire Repair Workers, Wrecker Operators, and Low-boy Operators;
- Establishes routes and priorities for rendering service;
- Determines where equipment should be towed;
- Initiates work orders for all mobile service calls and codes work to be done;
- Visually reviews mobile service work orders for accuracy and completeness after work is performed;
- Compiles and keeps detailed logs of all calls received;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Mobile service unit capacities, tools and equipment.
- Equipment maintenance shop and facilities.
- Learn departmental policies and procedures.
- Operate a base radio according to established standards.
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions over the telephone.
- Communicate orally with co-workers, customers, or clients in face-to- face one-to-one settings or using a telephone or base radio.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Understand and follow and give oral instructions in English.
- Keep accurate records, files and logs.
- Write legibly in the English language.
- Coordinate, schedule and prioritize the work of others.
- Work in stressful situations requiring the handling of emergency calls, and resolving other problems simultaneously and/or unexpectedly.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months of experience in semiskilled work in a motorized equipment repair facility, or three years of experience as a garage attendant in a work situation which provided familiarity with a variety of motorized equipment servicing functions. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
