DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to design layouts for new and revised forms, brochures and visual aides, working from rough copy and preparing materials for reproduction through the use of desktop publishing systems, multiple software programs, and peripheral output equipment. Work involves design, copy fitting, layout, paste-up, and color separation in the preparation of all types of printed material. Incumbents frequently interact with customers to advise on project materials and to answer technical questions. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Printing Services Supervisor or a Printing Services Foreman.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Uses multiple desktop publishing programs to design forms, newsletters, brochures, charts, annual reports, and books;
- Converts measures in inches to picas and prints;
- Operates personal computers and peripheral output equipment to produce copy for printed material;
- Designs layout and paste-up for finished camera copy;
- Uses a computerized printing management system to collect data on time and material usage;
- Advises customers on project materials (e.g., paper, ink colors, design styles, etc.);
- Answers technical desktop publishing questions;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- The operation of a desktop publishing system using Macintosh computers and a variety of software packages.
- Business English and spelling.
- Duplicating and printing processes pertaining to methods, paper stock, ink, abilities and disabilities of print shop reproduction equipment.
- Drawing instruments for preparing charts, graphs, and art work.
- Modern office equipment, practices and procedures.
Ability to:
- Creative layout and design in preparation for printed reproduction.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Enter data or information into a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time in performance of work.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
- Communicate in the English language with City personnel and vendors in a face-to-face, one-on-one setting or by telephone.
- Work independently within established procedures and policies.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand-eye movements.
- Measure distances using rulers.
- Read layouts to complete user requests.
- Make basic arithmetic calculations for recording data.
- Proof work for quality and accuracy.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Some positions require the use of a personal or City vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience performing responsible layout work requiring the operation of a desktop publishing system and associated software. Other combinations of education and experience that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
