LITHOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to photograph printed materials, illustrations and halftones to produce printing plates for reproduction by an offset or web press. Work involves selecting the type of plate to produce; setting up the camera; developing negatives; and stripping and burning negatives to metal plates. The Lithographic Photographer may be required to operate an offset press and bindery equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Printing Services Foreman and is evaluated based on the quality of work produced.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates a lithographic camera producing silver master plates, negative line film, positive paper film, and negative halftones in the City Clerk Department's Printing Services Section;
- Selects lens opening, exposure time, and plate length appropriate to the type and quality of original copy to be reproduced;
- Calculates the percentage of reduction of enlargement of original copy requested by users;
- Produces film plates for short run productions;
- Develops line negatives and strips and burns them to a metal plate by the use of a Nu Arc Burner;
- Operates a metal plate burner;
- Strips negatives for metal plates;
- Exposes and develops metal plates;
- Maintains a file of plates and negatives according to written procedures;
- Proofs work for quality and accuracy;
- Uses a computerized printing management system to collect data on time and material usage;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Principles of camera operation.
- Still and photographic techniques.
- Developing negatives and chemicals used.
- Graphics and stripping techniques.
- Equipment common to a print shop.
- Paper, inks, and other supplies used for reproducing a variety of printed products.
- Safety procedures relating to equipment operation and use of hazardous materials.
- Four-color process set-up
Ability to:
- Camera operation and graphics.
- Operation of reproduction and related equipment.
- Make basic arithmetic calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages in recording data.
- Read and use a proportion scale.
- Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
- Learn job-related work primarily through observation, and oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work independently within established procedures and policies.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to incumbent or others.
- Perceive the full range of the color spectrum.
- Enter data into a computer terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will be required to perform other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Some positions require the use of a personal or City vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience in operating a lithographic plate-producing camera or reproduction equipment, supplemented by courses in camera principles and operation. Other combinations of education and experience that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
