BUSINESS ASSISTANCE COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to coordinate and resolve complex development services activities. The Coordinator works with citizens and City departmental representatives to resolve property development problems. The incumbent manages and coordinates the daily activities of the Business Customer Service Center including construction permit activities associated with the City's Infill Program. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy City Manager and is evaluated on the basis of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Works directly with citizens and departmental representatives to resolve property development problems;
- Supervises and directs the activities of the Business Assistance Office staff;
- Convenes study groups to evaluate feasibility of changing development requirements that affect more than one City department;
- Undertakes special projects from the Mayor and City Manager involving coordination of staff members from development related departments;
- Prepares the Business Assistance Office budget and expenditure estimates, Reviews audit reports and monthly reports to the City Manager, prepares correspondence for Deputy City Manager and reviews Administrative Regulation changes;
- Serves on a variety of development related committees;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- City Codes and ordinances governing the property development process.
- Principles, methods and practices of municipal finance, budgeting and accounting.
- Practices, procedures and techniques of conducting public hearings.
- Land use relationships.
- Principles and practices of public administration.
- Modern management principles and practices.
- Plan, organize and direct the work of employees in the technical details of property development through verbal and written instructions.
- Coordinate the activities of multiple City departments in development services activities.
- Negotiate with citizens and department heads orally to enable and facilitate development activities in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
- Analyze, interpret and report findings and recommendations on technical or procedural problems clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Give oral and written presentations of ideas and findings.
- Work cooperatively with citizen groups, governmental committees and City departments.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self of other.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of responsible experience in public administration or public sector development services including one year of supervisory experience and a bachelor's degree in planning or public administration, or a closely related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
