MOTION PICTURE ASSISTANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide information and assistance upon request to local and out-of-state production companies and work with City departments in coordinating City services such as parking arrangements, street closures, and use of off-duty personnel and equipment. Employees are on call 24 hours a day and are required to work unusual hours attending evening and weekend meetings and providing assistance during location filming. Work involves direct contact with all aspects of the film and tape industry and allows considerable latitude for independent action. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Motion Picture Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Contacts property owners to determine possibility of shooting on property and charges involved;
- Contacts other City departments to coordinate street closures, police escorts, and other required City services and revises service schedules;
- Acts as a liaison between the production company, City, and public during filming by contacting concerned parties to resolve on location service problems;
- Provides location information and photos and availability of technical crews, talent, equipment rental, and hotel accommodations to production companies;
- Performs standard location research, scouting potential sites to determine their physical layout, compatibility with script needs, and location proximity;
- Reads scripts or basic information provided by production companies;
- Photographs various locations for consideration by production company location managers;
- Updates location photos and resource files;
- Compiles and prepares film activity report for Mayor and City Council;
- Updates the Phoenix Production Manual;
- Provides site location tours to producers, location and production managers, art directors, and directors;
- Makes on-site inspections of hotels and explains specific requirements to them if they are interested in providing accommodations to production companies;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Motion picture production industry and the production process for the purpose of coordinating information and services.
- Regulations, procedures, and services of City departments.
- Phoenix area and local production capabilities to facilitate their use in productions.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
- Produce written documents in English language using proper sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Work cooperatively with employees, clients, and the public.
- Work independently.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Communicate orally with co-workers, customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in group and face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in public relations, advertising, media production or local film and tape industry, including experience in clerical work and still photography. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
