FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to coordinate and oversee Fire and Life Safety Programs. Work includes supervising staff directly involved in the programs; researching, applying for, and administering grants for new and ongoing programs, and monitoring and evaluating the programs. An incumbent is also responsible for negotiating hotel contracts for symposiums hosted by the Fire Department; coordinating and overseeing special programs; and managing program budgets. The Fire and Life Safety Programs Coordinator must be able to chair panels that consist of legal, mental health, social services, public safety, and other professionals in the community. Work is performed with considerable independence. Performance is evaluated by a Fire Battalion Chief*Deputy on the basis of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates, oversees, and evaluates fire and life safety programs (e.g., Youth Firesetter Prevention Program, and Senior Fire and Life Safety Program), and other special programs;
- Researches, applies for, and administers grants for new and ongoing programs;
- Manages program budgets;
- Chairs panels and committees (e.g., Citizen Advisory Panel and Senior Outreach Panel);
- Supervises staff that work with special populations;
- Negotiates hotel contracts for symposiums hosted by the Fire Department and contracts for special projects;
- Works with senior Fire Department staff on special projects;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Direct and review the work of paraprofessional staff and Fire Captains.
- Work cooperatively with City departments and other governmental, social services, and private agencies.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
- Write magazine articles, reports, and grants with clearly organized thoughts using proper English sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Analyze and interpret research findings and conclusions relative to firesetting trends and ongoing and prospective departmental programs.
- Communicate orally with City employees, the general public, and representatives outside the City structure in one-on-one and group settings, by telephone, and on television.
- Enter data or information into a computer or other keyboard device.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This position may require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. The employee must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- This position requires the performance of other essential or marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of responsible experience working in public or school administration, or community service, including at least one year of supervisory experience, and a bachelor's degree in education, sociology, psychology, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
