ASSISTANT TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to assist the Transportation Supervisor in the planning and supervision of the Human Services Reserve-A-Ride program for the elderly and disabled residents of the City of Phoenix. Duties include receiving transportation requests, assigning client pick ups to drivers, and reassigning pick up and drop times for permanent routes as routes and clients change, and supervising part-time van drivers and clerical staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Receives transportation requests from eligible clients, schedules driver assignments, and dispatches drivers and vehicles;
- Assigns pick up and drop times and edits routes according to time and pick up order and zone restrictions;
- Informs staff and clients of ride service locations;
- Assists drivers with client problems;
- Instructs clients on proper pick up preparation;
- Inspects vehicles for damage and compliance with safety standards;
- Ensures vehicles are equipped properly for special needs of clients;
- Observes driving skills and work habits of drivers in the field;
- Responds to problems in the field such as equipment failures and vehicle accidents;
- Performs full range of supervisory duties over full-time and part-time van drivers and clerical staff;
- Updates mileage, usage, transportation, vehicle and other related reports;
- Analyzes client needs and makes recommendations for developing, implementing, improving, and expanding transportation services;
- Investigates and resolves citizen complaints;
- Operates and oversees a computerized route scheduling system;
- Updates the vehicle preventative maintenance schedule;
- Sorts separates, arranges, files or distributes incoming mail, products or material;
- Performs physical inventories;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone, and in group and face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
- Observe or monitor objects, data and people's behavior to determine the compliance with operating and safety standards.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Produce documents written in the English language using proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment such as copy machine, calculator, and facsimile machine.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Move heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds distances less than 20 feet.
- Move light objects weighing less than 20 pounds distances more than 20 feet.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years experience in organized transportation activities, including one year of dispatching and supervisory experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
