DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform basic operator functions while developing higher level operator skills. An incumbent sets up and makes adjustments to equipment using both manufacturer's instructions and system operating procedures, under the direction of a Senior Computer Operator. Performance is evaluated on the quality and quantity of work accomplished.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Receives on-the-job and formal training in the operation of a variety of computer and peripheral equipment;
- Under the direction of a Senior Computer Operator, operates peripheral equipment which includes card readers, printers, tape drives, and other peripheral devices as necessary;
- Learns to detect and initiate procedures to correct equipment malfunctions;
- Learns to make adjustments to computer equipment using prescribed operating procedures;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Successfully complete the structured training program.
- Learn operation of large scale and/or mini data processing systems.
- Learn Job Control Language and job stream set-up.
- Learn to set up and operate a variety of computer equipment.
- Learn to make decisions regarding operation of large scale computer and related equipment based on prescribed procedures.
- Move objects such as computer paper weighing 50 pounds or more, short distances (20 feet or less).
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self and others.
Additional Requirements:
- Appointment to positions in the Police Department are subject to meeting appropriate polygraph and background standards.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience performing basic clerical work. Other combinations of education and experience that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
