COMPUTER OPERATOR
JOB CODE 09510
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to run routine operational programs and operate electronic computers and associated auxiliary equipment in a large scale computer facility. An incumbent sets up and makes adjustments to equipment using both the manufacturer's instructions and system operating procedures, under the direction or supervision of a Lead Computer Operator or other supervisor. Performance is evaluated on the quality and quantity of work accomplished.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates all computer and auxiliary equipment, including large and small scale electronic data processing systems, based on prescribed procedures;
- Operates peripheral equipment which includes mounting forms in printers, and mounting tapes and disks on respective devices;
- Operates system console under the direction of a Lead Computer Operator or other supervisor;
- Observes the operation of the computer and auxiliary equipment;
- Installs, replaces, or adjusts filters, ribbons, belts, or similar objects to maintain equipment;
- Prepares equipment for operation;
- Updates magnetic tape library/libraries;
- Unloads and separates printer output in preparation for distribution;
- Performs after hours and weekend help desk functions;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Operation of large and small scale electronic data processing systems.
- Command languages for multiple processing platform system softwares and related peripheral equipment.
- Job control language.
- Computer production control procedures.
- Set up and operate a variety of computer equipment.
- Make decisions regarding the operation of large and small scale computer and related equipment based on prescribed procedures.
- Move objects such as computer paper weighing 50 pounds or more, short distances (20 feet or less).
- Enters data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Learn job related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on the job setting.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Accurately interpret computer-issued error messages and take appropriate action.
- Operate computer center equipment.
- Prepare and maintain logs and records.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience as a computer operator on a large scale system. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
