LEAD COMPUTER OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to serve as a shift supervisor in the operation of EDP equipment in a large scale computer facility, which includes mini-computers and related auxiliary equipment. Incumbents are responsible for planning and quality control; handling the most difficult applications and troubleshooting problems; reconfiguring hardware to prevent system failure and promote efficient data processing; and developing and implementing procedures and techniques necessary for efficient data processing. Duties are performed with independent judgment and initiative under the general direction of a supervisor. Performance is evaluated on the quality and quantity of work produced.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises Computer Operators on an assigned shift;
- Operates all computer equipment at a centralized data center;
- Resolves problems caused by or related to computer equipment;
- Operates tape/disk library;
- Prepares written accurate and complete shift and system console logs;
- Notifies appropriate personnel of significant operations problems;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Diagnose equipment malfunctions and directs corrective action.
- Implement new operating techniques as they are developed.
- Handle emergency situations quickly and calmly.
- Ensure the effective utilization of equipment to meet production needs and schedules.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material in the English language.
- Move heavy objects, such as computer paper weighing 50 pounds or more, short distances (20 feet or less).
- Learn job related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on the job training setting.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience as a computer operator on a large scale system and nine semester hours of computer science coursework. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
