INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRAINEE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to train the incumbent to perform applications programming and related tasks of average difficulty for on-line and/or batch projects. Work includes translating specifications into computer languages and testing results to ensure accurate logic, operation and output. Incumbents apply fundamental mathematical knowledge and logic, as well as knowledge of computer language to solve programming problems, usually in one functional area. Assignments are of moderate scope and complexity; work is performed with a limited amount of independence, with progress and results checked by a supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Writes, corrects, modifies, and makes modifications to computer programs;
- Tests the accuracy of newly written or modified computer programs;
- Receives training to increase knowledge of computer software/hardware;
- Debugs new and existing programs.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Principles and techniques of structured applications programming.
- Program/Job Control Language and computer programming in COBOL, FORTRAN or some other acceptable high level language.
- Learn job-related material through formal training, oral instruction and observation. This learning also takes place in an on-the-job training setting.
- Develop logical code for efficient program execution.
- Debug new and existing programs.
- Enter and retrieve data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time while working at a computer terminal.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Appointments to positions in the Police Department are subject to meeting appropriate polygraph and background standards.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of a designated training program or graduation from a recognized technical/programming school/junior college. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
