COMPUTER OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to analyze the design and equipment requirements of the information technology data communications network and monitor the installation and operation of all workstations and peripheral equipment in the network. The Computer Operations Specialist investigates all types of communication equipment and recommends improvements to the existing equipment, monitors the installation and operation of central office equipment and all user workstations and peripheral equipment, solves all user communication problems, and trains or retrains user workstation operators. The Specialist reports to an Applications Systems Supervisor and performance is evaluated through conferences, reports, and results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Configures and records changes to network based on approved requests for additional workstations and peripheral equipment;
- Resolves user problems related to workstations or communications lines;
- Serves as a liaison between users and manufacturers representatives response for service relating to major equipment outage;
- Analyzes communication trouble calls and determines corrective measures;
- Oversees responses to communication problem calls and reports how problem was resolved;
- Designs and lays out and documents data communication networks and oversees the installation of equipment and user training in operation of workstations;
- Keeps inventory records of all communication workstations and associated equipment;
- Creates instruction manuals for Operating Systems (O/S), system procedures, and report procedures;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Computer hardware and all types of related communication equipment.
- Communication transmission requirements and trouble resolution.
- Workstation and peripheral equipment set-up.
- Communication interfaces and the electrical and wiring specification for all computer related communications equipment.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone, face to face, one to one setting, or using data network systems.
- Move objects 20-50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience in data communications network design and operation, systems programming, operations analysis, or field engineering (software and operating system installation and maintenance). Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
