RISK MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR
JOB CODE 12320
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to participate in and supervise work in the areas of claims management, accident investigations, and loss prevention or insurance and risk management consultation. Incumbents are responsible for contract compliance and overseeing the operations of the City's contracted staff as related to insurance, indemnification, and other contractual risk transfer issues. Work performed requires the application of accepted liability claims or multi-line commercial insurance/risk management principles and techniques, and use of sound professional judgment. This classification differs from the Claims Adjuster classifications in the degree of independence allowed, difficulty of claims handled, and requirement of training and supervising City employees. The Risk Management’s Deputy Finance Director or the Assistant Risk Management Administrator evaluates performance based upon results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises Claims Adjustors or other City employees and contracted staff;
- Develops special programs and performs research studies for more effective claims management and insurance procurement or loss control;
- Reviews and assigns liability claims to adjustors and contract claims adjustment or risk management firms and monitors and evaluates their work;
- Works with consultants, attorneys, medical personnel, and contractors to gain information for claims management, insurance, or loss control consultation;
- Reviews results of claims and accident investigations and makes recommendations to appropriate management for settlement and file conclusions and possible policy/procedure changes;
- Introduces and interprets rules, regulations, and procedures to department management and employees;
- Prepares bid specifications for contract claims adjusting/appraisal, insurance, and other risk management services;
- Keeps informed of new ideas and techniques in insurance, claims, and risk management fields;
- Monitors outside contractors for compliance with City claims, insurance, and loss control requirements;
- Makes oral presentations to City personnel on claims management, insurance and indemnification issues, and loss prevention;
- Advises departments on contractual risk transfer requirements for all types of professional and non-professional service contracts and commodity purchases;
- Provides consulting advice to City departments on a wide array of risk management related issues;
- Assigns and monitors loss control evaluations conducted by consultants on contract with the Risk Management Division;
- Enters data or information into a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Exercise sound judgment in completing assignments.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in group and face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
- Operate a computer terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Produce documents written in the English language using proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of progressively responsible claims management, multi-line commercial insurance procurement, or risk management consulting experience, and a bachelor's degree in risk management, business administration or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
