CLAIMS ADJUSTER II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to investigate and adjust third party bodily injury and property damage claims, process subrogation claims, write reports, and perform other claims related tasks. Incumbents work under general supervision on routine assignments and under closer supervision on assignments involving complex claims. Initiative and judgment are applied in accordance with established policies. Work is reviewed through work papers, reports, and conferences with the supervising Risk Management Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Adjusts and supervises assigned claims on an on-going basis to achieve established goals and objectives;
• Reviews work and directs contract claims adjustors/appraisers regarding third party liability claims;
• Conducts incident investigations from the office and in the field;
• Interprets rules, regulations, and procedures to management and other employees;
• Receives and evaluates information to determine legal liability;
• Processes liability claims and subrogation files;
• Works with consultants, attorneys, medical personnel, and contractors to gain information for claims management;
• Assists with litigation management;
• Enters data or information into a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device;
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Generally accepted liability claims handling practices.
• Risk management regulations and procedures.

Ability to:

• Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in a face-to-face, one-on-one setting.
• Operate a computer terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
• Produce documents written in the English language using proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
• Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.

Additional Requirements:

• Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience in liability claims handling and a bachelor's degree in risk management, business administration, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
