The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform technical presentation graphics for print, interactive multimedia, video and film in connection with various planning studies and reports. Planning Graphic Designers work under the general supervision of a Planning Technician Supervisor. Work is reviewed in terms of effectiveness of the finished project. Considerable latitude and independence are allowed in the development and completion of projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Designs and prepares covers, reports, posters, brochures, special maps, displays, and related materials;
- Makes artist conceptions of projects using various types of media;
- Advises on artistic and visual aid presentation of technical and statistical information such as providing technical advice on working drawings;
- Edits images using various graphics software, digital cameras and scanners;
- Uses computer graphics and photo editing software to prepare comprehensive layouts various forms of media;
- Designs and updates internet web pages;
- Performs video editing;
- Researches and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of new software and equipment;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- The use of computer graphics and photo editing software.
- The use of digital cameras, scanners, plotters, printers, and related equipment.
- Use of animation software.
- Make artistic layouts independently under general supervision.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings or using a telephone.
- Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Perform minor maintenance on printers, plotters, scanners and related graphics equipment;
- Perceive color as defined by the Inter Society Color Council-National Bureau of Standards system.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Present facts clearly and accurately in graphic form.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Associate's degree in computer graphics, art, or a related field and two years of experience in commercial graphics design. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
