CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR
JOB CODE 19000
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform limited technical and skilled building, site development, and public works construction inspection work in the field. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Senior Construction Inspector, Chief Construction Inspector, or other supervisor who checks work for technical accuracy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as a trainee in the inspection of sidewalks, street, alley, sewer, water, storm drain and other public works construction projects and permit construction in the public right-of-way;
- Serves as a trainee in the inspection of site development (underground utilities extension, paved parking lots, and sidewalks), landscape irrigation systems, area lighting and building construction;
- Inspects installation of mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems (MPE) in conjunction with Building Safety Inspectors who are responsible for compliance with construction code;
- Observes and ensures that materials are in accordance with and used in accordance with standard details specifications, approved plans and normal construction practices;
- Maintains required records of job progress;
- Compiles monthly and final pay statements;
- Records all field changes for "as-built" drawings on field plan set or assures the contractor and/or architect/engineer are recording changes;
- Ensures that required safety standards and traffic control measures are complied with;
- Handles property owners complaints and inquiries as to construction activities;
- Calls for survey support as required by construction progress;
- Takes samples for various materials tests and calls for materials section testing as required;
- Performs inspection tests to evaluate compliance of work with project requirements such as light intensities, hydrostatic and pressure tests, etc.;
- Coordinates work with other City Agencies and departments;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Engineering and architectural terminology.
- Basic construction procedures and techniques.
- Engineering plans and specifications.
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measures.
- Perform basic algebraic and geometric calculations.
- Read and understand simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
- Communicate in the English language and work cooperatively with engineers/architects contractors and the general public.
- Learn inspections procedures.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in construction-related activities. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
