CONSTRUCTION DRAFTING TECHNICIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform civil engineering and public works calculations for final quantities on a variety of public works projects. Assignments involve the application of mathematical skills and surveying knowledge gained through training or experience. Work is ordinarily performed under the general supervision of the Survey Engineer who makes assignments and reviews results and production. Some drafting is performed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Computes quantity take off counts and calculations of materials used from record drawings;
- Assists in the preparation of record drawings of City inspected construction projects by drafting survey data onto original design project tracings, reflecting all work performed, materials used, and changes made;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Civil engineering and survey terminology.
- Symbols and terminology used in engineering drafting.
- Standard MAG details and specifications.
- Procedures used in the construction of public works projects.
- Employ the practical application of survey engineering mathematics, practical algebra, geometric construction, and essentials of trigonometry using a calculator or computer.
- Understand and comply with written and oral instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Communicate orally with other City employees and the public in face-to-face, one-on-one settings, in group settings, and using a telephone.
- Use graphic instructions such as layouts or blueprints.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to work at a drafting table.
- Make continuous or repetitive hand-arm movements.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device to update a data base.
- Use a calculator to perform mathematical computations.
- Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper English sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.
- Observe, compare or monitor data to determine the accuracy of record drawings.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in engineering drafting and survey work, including one year performing calculations to determine areas and volumes. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
