DRAFTING TECHNICIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform limited technical and skilled engineering drafting work in the office. Work is distinguished from the Senior Drafting Technician by the limited technical assignments given or the lack of supervisory reponsibilities. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the supervisor who checks for technical accuracy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drafts, profiles, cross sections, road and storm drainage alignments, right-of-way maps, and topographical features;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Civil Engineering terminology.
- Drafting techniques used in Civil Engineering.
- Plans and specifications for construction projects and quarter-section maps.
Skill in:
Ability to:
- Use of various drafting instruments and equipment.
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
- Perform basic algebraic calculations.
- Prepare basic engineering drawings, utilizing the methods and techniques of drafting technical information.
- Read and understand simple specifications and shop drawings.
- Read and understand construction plans and specifications.
- Prepare accurate notes and sketches.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in engineering drafting work within the past three years. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
