SENIOR DRAFTING TECHNICIAN
JOB CODE 19130
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled technical civil engineering, architectural or electronic drafting work of increasing difficulty in the Aviation, Engineering and Architectural Services, Fire, Public Works, Street Transportation or Water Services Departments. Work at this level is distinguished from the Drafting Technician by performance of the full range of drafting duties under general supervision. Some positions supervise Drafting Technicians or Engineering Aides. The individual assignments determine the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Assignments are made by registered architects, professional engineers, Chief Drafting Technicians or other supervisors with general review of finished work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drafts original plans for the City and changes plans drawn by consulting engineers or other City staff for public works projects;
- Prepares and updates official City and water and wastewater quarter-section maps and fire hydrant, water distribution, and wastewater trunk maps;
- Evaluates and interprets survey grading and drainage data to be used in the preparation of drawings;
- Performs field investigations of existing conditions of sites to be improved for clarification of survey, grading, and drainage data and to obtain additional design information;
- Prepares original landscape plans and construction details;
- Prepares project documents for new buildings, remodeling, or renovation of existing buildings, and repair of buildings such as reroofing projects;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Symbols and terminology used in civil, architectural or electronic engineering drawings.
- Mechanical systems such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
- Construction practices and techniques.
- Electronic calculators.
Ability to:
- Drafting instruments and equipment, and computer aided drafting equipment.
- Prepare engineering, architectural, and landscape drawings from sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and legal descriptions.
- Produce neat, precise, well-balanced drawings in ink on mylar, cloth or paper.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Perform mathematical calculations using fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, mensuration, logarithms, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces when conducting field inspections.
- Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
- Remain in a sitting position for long periods of time.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to work at a drafting table.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in drafting work, including one year of experience performing technical and skilled engineering drafting work (or at the level of Drafting Technician). Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
